The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Comes After Poor Reception
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined vision.
The president noted that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full content from the president's announcement:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. After several months of talks, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
His guidance and background in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving him soon. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of the game in the time to follow.
David
Background of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Take on the competition with new abilities, stakes, and obstacles that change every session. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and trust your team can secure victory? The decision is up to you."
The game does not have an announced launch window or platforms, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as production continues.
